Professor Gün R. Semin is currently Professor of Psychology at ISPA -Instituto Universitário and the founding Director of the William James Center for Research at the same institution in Lisbon, Portugal. He was an Academy Professor with The Netherlands Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences at Utrecht University. Additionally, he was a Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at Koç University, Istanbul. He has previously served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Social Psychology at the Free University (1990-2004), where he also was the Research Director (2000-2003) of the Faculty of Psychology and Education. 
His main research interests are in the communication of emotions via chemosignals, embodied social cognition, communication, language, and interspecies communication via chemosignals. He is a widely published author and has developed a linguistic model, which has resulted in the study of language and social cognition as well as a novel research area on the communication of emotions via human body odors. He has been awarded the Theoretical Innovation Prize of the Society of Personality and Social Psychology, for his work on socially situated cognition. In 2020, he received the Thomas M. Ostrom Award, which recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to theory and research in the field of social cognition.
