Abstract:
Mental health problems among children and adolescents have been increasing, representing one of the main causes of suffering and long-term social costs. In Portugal, this challenge is particularly relevant in a context of increasing demand and limited resources. Despite evidence on the benefits of early intervention, policies and investments in prevention remain scarce.
This session presents an economic perspective on the value of prevention in child mental health: how to measure the costs, benefits, and impact of programs targeting children, youth, and families. Examples from international and national studies will be discussed, as well as evidence on the social and economic return of early investment. The goal is to highlight the role of economic evaluation in promoting more equitable and sustainable mental health policies from the earliest years of life.
